Text Box:   Preface about the port ......     The port lise near Arabian Gulf 75km from the western entrance to Basrah city. The increasing of foreign commercial movement and congestion called for the need to construct new port. And Umm Qaser zone is suitable because of its nearness to the Arabian Gulf and vessels do not need to pass through marine channels besides its deep waters which help to receive vessels of deeper draft than port of Maqal was allowable  75

Text Box: A conveyor belt of one km length equipped with a ship loader was installed for that purpose then a specialized jetty for containers was built dimensions of 250*35 m.and equipped with two gantry cranes of capacity 40 tons each. After that others additional jetties were constructed. then 10 new jetties were constructed which included warehouses, shade, stroing yars besided two gantry cranes for loading or discharging containers.Work is continuing now to build two wharves to the south of the 10 wharves.the .this would be expanded to 4new jetties also of  future projects there are 13wharves of varioous uses

 

Text Box:        All these encouraging goods points led to construct Umm Qasr port in 1965.It contained three modern concrete jetties at the time with a total length of 640m There were 3 warehouses and 3 sheds along  side the jetties which were equipped with ten wharf cranes One of those three jetties was developed to become asuliphate-exporting jetty brought from Mashraq field
